So, if you listened to our most recent episode of the world’s greatest comic book related podcast, Hold 322, then you heard me break the news that DC comics has fired Gail Simone from her writing duties on Batgirl. Here’s the story:

You read it. I’ll wait here. Are you done yet? Good. I’ll toss in my two cents now.
This is stupid. This “decision” is yet another bone-headed move by the once great company that has become the home of the pealed band-aid. As annoyed as I’ve been by some of their creative and editorial decisions of the past couple years, this bit of blunder-ment really has my fan-boy ire raging.
I have been a fan of Gail Simone’s work for years, and her work on Batgirl has been one of the few bright spots of the new 52 lineup. Gail has given us a wonderful representation of Barbara Gordon and shown us the character‘s journey from recovering gunshot victim to confident and capable crime fighter. I’m not yet ready to declare that I’m going to drop the title from my hold box after Gail’s departure, but I very well might. I can’t imagine they’re going to replace Gail with someone who will equal or surpass her quality of work. I suspect this change can only be a downgrade.
I urge you all to send angry emails to Brian Cunningham at DC Comics, letting him know that this decision stinks. Feel free to use curse words and exclamation points.
That’s all from me today. Until my next blog, be sure to listen to Hold 322, follow me on twitter @Robert_A_Easton, and read comics, read comics, read comics.
